Very slow file opening in macOS Sequoia

Post by mboudreau »

I have Oxygen XML Editor 27.0 installed on an iMac running macOS Sequoia (15.3.1), and ever since I upgraded the macOS from Sonoma to Sequoia, I find that the first time Oxygen opens a file, it takes more than a full minute to open. Oxygen itself starts up in just a few seconds, as usual. And after the first file is open, other files open right away. But the first file always takes a very long time. I get the same result regardless of whether the first or subsequent files are XML, HTML, or something else.

Has anyone else reported a problem like this? Is there a solution?

Hello,
I find that the first time Oxygen opens a file, it takes more than a full minute to open.
Are you referring to double clicking a file in the Finder that starts Oxygen or starting Oxygen and then opening a file within it?
In the former case there is the application startup to take into account, so 1 minute may be expected in some situations.

Where are the files you open located (locally, some remote "drive", mounted network location)?
If the opened file refers other remote resources, it can take some time until all indicated resources are retrieved.

Hi Adrian,

I'm referring to opening a file after Oxygen has already started. On Sequoia, Oxygen takes only a few seconds to start, just as it did on previous versions of macOS.

After Oxygen is running, opening an XML file on the Desktop, with no remote resources required, took 75 seconds when I tested it just now. However, after closing the file, re-opening it took only a few seconds, and opening a different file also took only a few seconds.

Hi everyone,
probably no news here?
I have the exact same issue: Opening the first file in Oxygen takes ages.
Im on Sequoia (15.5) as well, newest Oxygen XML Editor 27.1, build 2025041508.
It also impacts startup of Oxygen, during opening of previous opened files – with no previous files open it starts very quick.
I’d suspect that its related to some MacOS file permission checks or something?
Cheers, martin

Hi martin,

Where is the file stored (locally or some remote storage)?
Is the file referencing other resources that may be remote?

Before opening the file pull up the Information view (menu > Window > Show view > ). It also works immediately after opening the file, if this happens at startup.
It should give you some idea about what files it's accessing and may indicate if it waits for something in specific.
If it contains data you'd rather not make public, please send the Information log to support@oxygenxml.com, so we can have a look.

Hi Adrian,
thanks for the feedback.
It does not matter which kind of file: Even a simple .txt with "Hello world" has the same issue– information panel is empty in that case.
And it’s just about local files, it doesn’t seem to matter which folder.
Cheers, martin

A .txt is the lightest thing that can possibly be open. If even that glitches, there is an underlying issue.
How about Oxygen itself, is it installed locally in /Applications, or are you running it from another location that may be slow to access?
Is there an antivirus or third party security app running on your system and possibly scanning apps as they run?

Can you see anything peculiar in the macOS system Console log, under Log reports, or system.log?

Hi Adrian,
yes, Oxygen is installed as usual inside /Applications
I have Bitdefender running – deactivated it today to test it, that doesn’t change anything.
And nothing suspicious at all to see in system.log etc. – it stays mysterious.
Are there any detailed logs created by Oxygen that could be helpful?

To make things weirder, what I’ve noticed so far:
- if I have some archive opened in the archive browser, that loads quick on startup, and I can even open the contents quickly.
- opening an image with the image preview is fast
- opening with the integrated HEX view, or the viewer for big files (if it’s called that way in English) work fine and quick
- but: opening any file in the regular editor shows the initial delay

Hi Martin,

Interesting about the files from the archive...
Check your email for instructions on how to activate logging. Please send the logs via email or the tech support form:
