19.1 Responsive Top Nav Not Obeying Top Menu Depth Setting

Post by misti »

Hello-

We recently updated to 19.1. The webhelp responsive is no longer limiting the top nav depth. We have it set to 3 by default but the top nav was displaying up to 5 levels deep. I set it to 2 to test and it was still showing up to 5 levels. Is there a way to fix this?

Thanks,
Misti

Hi Misti,

Starting with v19.1 the WebHelp Responsive menu was redesigned and instead of being generated a static HTML in every topic, it is dynamically loaded when the user hovers over the chapter title:

WebHelp Menu is Created Dynamically
The WebHelp menu was redesigned so that it is created dynamically when the user hovers over a certain topic. This reduces the size of the generated HTML files and increases the loading speed.
Indeed, the 'webhelp.top.menu.depth' parameter is not taking into account anymore. I have added an issue to our tracking tool to be analyzed.
If the dynamically loaded menu does not suite your requirements, please let us know more details about your use-case.Then, I'll add your comments to our issue.

A top nav that goes out several levels is a terrible user experience because it's so difficult to use. When tech comm redesigned our help system the UX team was completely against having a top nav at all; setting the top nav depth to 3 was a compromise we made in order to even have it.

In addition to this nav depth issue, the last menu in our top nav isn't even usable anymore because it gets cut off by the end of the browser window instead of switching to the other side. Before the contents of the menu were accessible and now they can't even be seen.

We really don't care about the building on demand feature; page load times in the current help system have never been an issue. We need a usable, well designed help system.

Hello,

You can use one of the following two procedures to hide entries in the top menu:

Hi Alin-

Yes, we're aware of how to do that, but it's quite a bit of work to append filtering data to hundreds of topics vs just setting a processing parameter. Our best option at this point is to roll back to Oxygen 19 and stay there until there's an option to update to a version that doesn't "break" our help system.

Thanks,

Hi Misti,

Thank you for your feedback.
The issue regarding 'webhelp.top.menu.depth' parameter will be reanalyzed. We'll update this thread if the possibility to specify the maximum depth level of the topics included in the top menu will be back implemented.

The other issue with menu items that gets cut off by the end of the browser window is also logged to our issue tracking tool and it will be resolved in a future version of oXygen XML.

Hello,

Just to update the thread, in the latest maintenance build of Oxygen 19.1, 2017121318 (released on December 13th) we have reimplemented the "webhelp.top.menu.depth" parameter. It controls the maximum depth (number of levels) of the menu and the default value is 3. The value 0 means that the menu has an unlimited depth.
WebHelp Responsive: The "webhelp.top.menu.depth" parameter is again taken into consideration.
You can download it from our web site:
http://www.oxygenxml.com/download.html

The list of bug-fixes can be found here:

You can follow the release/build RSS feed here:

Let us know if you encounter further problems with this new build.
