Oxygen 15.1 Slow?

Post by hlapin »

I am starting to shift my editing activity from 15 to 15.1.
Oxygen 15.1 in Text mode seems to respond much more slowly editing the same modestly sized bidi files (most recent example 192k). I am working in Windows 7 professional, and have the 64-bit version of Oxygen installed in both cases.
Is this an issue with Oxygen, or could it be something I am doing locally?

Many thanks!

Hi,

For the Text mode there are no significant differences between v15.0 and v15.1 regarding BiDi.
Note however that v15.1 has full support for BiDi editing in Author mode and this support is more robust than the one from Text mode.

It's possible that you have different options in v15.1 than v15.0. e.g. The BiDi mode might be disabled in v15.0.
If you still have both v15.0 and v15.1 compare between the two the options from Options > Preferences, Editor > Open/Save. Look at the Open and the Performance subsections.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the long gap in answering.
I walked through all the preference settings, especially the ones you recommended looking at. Bidi support is on in 15.0, all the other open and performance settings are identical.

Hi,

Assuming you haven't changed other parameters (in .vmoptions files), the Java runtimes are different between the two versions of Oxygen and could affect this.
v15.0 bundles Java SE 7u15 (1.7.0_15).
v15.1 bundles Java SE 7u40 (1.7.0_40).

If you still have the two versions of Oxygen installed side by side, try switching the Java runtime:
1. Quit Oxygen 15.1.
2. Navigate to the Oxygen 15.1 installation folder and rename the 'jre' folder. (e.g. 'jre.old')
3. Navigate to the Oxygen 15.0 installation folder and copy the 'jre' folder from there to the Oxygen 15.1 installation folder.
4. Start Oxygen 15.1 and check the Java runtime version in Help > About, System properties, java.runtime.version. It should be 1.7.0_15.
5. Test if it works better with BiDi.
6. If it didn't make any difference you can switch back, delete the copied 'jre' folder and rename the 'jre.old' folder back to 'jre'.

Please let me know of the results.

Adrian

Hi, thanks for looking into this.
In fact, changing the Java Runtime Environment to that of 15.0 made a significant difference!
Hope this helps others as well!

Hi,

I've submitted an issue to profile the editing of BiDi files in Oxygen against Java 7u15 and 7u40 and make a comparison between the results. If there's any way to work around this and improve the performance, we will attempt to do so.

Thanks,
Adrian
