Linux: Attribute value selection blanks out app window
Hi,
using Oxygen 9.1 under Linux (RedHat 9A, JVM in PATH is 1.5.0_02), I observed a very annoying bug: Only when the attributes panel is in "hide automatically" [1] mode, every time when I select the drop-down menu of an attribute with a enumeration of values, Oxygen's complete application window gets blanked out. I.e., it just shows the grey window background and does not accept any input anymore.
Sometimes, the Editor panel later reemerges, but the rest of the application's window contents won't come back, even after minimizing the window and restoring it to its original size. I have to close and restart Oxygen to put it back into its normal state.
I suspect that this might be related to the Metal Look&Feel.
What can I do to track down the source of this problem? And how to solve it?
Yves
[1] I'm guessing the English name from its German translation. Sorry for not being able to give the precise English term, I tried hard to find a description of this function in the online help/user's guide, but could not find any.

Hello,
It looks like an incompatibility between the Java virtual machine implementation and the window manager running on your Red Hat computer. What window manager do you use? Can you try with a recent version of Java? Your version (1.5.0_02) is quite old and more recent versions provide better integration with the host desktop environment. You find in the User Manual how to set a specific Java version for running Oxygen.
As alternative in case you downloaded the Linux kit of Oxygen 9.1 long ago you should download and use the Linux kit available now on the Download page as it includes the Java version 1.6.0_05.
Regards,
Sorin

Re: Linux: Attribute value selection blanks out app window
I'm using Metacity. (RedHat 9A must definitely have come with an older JVM than 1.5.0_02.)sorin wrote:It looks like an incompatibility between the Java virtual machine implementation and the window manager running on your Red Hat computer. What window manager do you use?
Now I've tried with the JVM 1.6.0_05 that ships with Oxygen 9.1. (BTW, given that the Linux Kit already has the newest JVM included, I wonder why you don't make the Oxygen startup script use the included, well-chosen JVM by default, instead of looking for some unknown JVM version that the system might provide.)sorin wrote: Can you try with a recent version of Java? Alas, this has not changed anything at all. The bug will still reliably occur under the described circumstances.
I also observed an error message on the shell that might or might not be related to the above problem, because it only appears from time to time (with both JVMs tested), with Oxygen hanging. I can think of no way to reproduce it. It reads like:
(process:5538): GLib-WARNING **: g_main_context_prepare(): main loop already active in another thread
Can you think of an explanation?
That link seems to be broken (but I already had downloaded the User's Guide as PDF file before and have found the section you were pointing to).sorin wrote:You find in the User Manual how to set a specific Java version for running Oxygen.

Thank you for reporting the problem. I can reproduce it only on a Linux machine. We will look into it.
Regards,
Sorin
Oxygen does not call the GLib library directly. However this warning may be connected with the problem that you reported but we cannot know until we look into it. We will update this topic with the result of what we will find.yvesforkl wrote:(process:5538): GLib-WARNING **: g_main_context_prepare(): main loop already active in another thread
