How File Locking and Unlocking Work
How file locks work in a review task and how a file becomes available again for other reviewers.
If concurrent editing is disabled for the task, when you edit a file in a review task, the file remains locked so that other users cannot edit it at the same time.
If other users have the file open, their avatars appear on the right side of the file entry
in the Files page. Hover over an avatar to see the user name. If
another user is editing the file, a
Lock icon appears on the left side of the file entry
in the Files page and that user's avatar has a red border.
When a file is locked, other users cannot edit it until the user who holds the lock releases it. The lock is released in the following situations:
- The file is no longer open in the visual editor. For example, the user navigates to a page that does not contain the visual editor, opens another review task file, or closes the browser window.
- The user remains inactive for more than 10 minutes. The editor switches to read-only mode and the file is unlocked. Other users can then start editing the file. If no one else starts editing it, or after another user finishes and the file becomes available again, a Resume Editing button appears so you can switch back to editing mode and try to obtain the lock.
The lock status refreshes automatically every minute. If another user unlocks a file, you might not see the change immediately unless you refresh the page manually.
