Footnote Marks Missing

When generating a PDF with XEP, footnote marks appear properly at the spot where they are entered in the XML, but the marks do not appear next to the body of the footnote at the bottom of the page. The same XML works properly when transformed to HTML

Has anyone seen this behavior, and better still, know how to fix it?

I'm doing XEP transforms and getting the footnotes marked correctly. I have senn that if only one footnote appears on a page that sometimes(?) the footnote marker does not appear. never had any trouble when more than one footnote on a page
