Slow response time editing file

I am having trouble editing files that are not well formed. My files that don't "pretty print" are hard to edit. The response time is excruciatingly slow just moving the cursor or typing a letter. What can I do to speed this process up?

There are performance problems when editing text on very long lines. The workaround is to brake these long lines into several smaller lines.
