MathType - Save Special Characters as value

Post by Ali-a »

Hello,

Since MathFlow has been deprecated, we are transitioning to MathType. Previously, MathFlow included an option to save special characters as their actual values instead of their entity values. I don’t see this option available in the Oxygen 26.1 + MathType 2.3.2 setup. Is there a plan to add this feature, and are there any current workarounds to achieve the same result in version 26.1?

Hello Ahmed,
The integration between Oxygen and MathType is built by Wiris, the company which develops MathType so please address this question to them.

I support this feature request — it would be very useful for those working with large or multi-version documentation projects, as it helps reduce manual steps and minimize sync errors.

A few points that might help prioritize it:

Short description: Clearly define what the feature should do (e.g., automate X, export/import Y, or integrate with Z).

Real-world use case: For example, maintaining consistent metadata or styles across multiple files/branches.

Benefits: Saves time, reduces errors, and fits better into CI/CD workflows.

Current workaround: If any exists (scripts, plugins, etc.), mention it along with its limitations.

Would be great to hear if there's any update or workaround in the meantime. Thanks!

Hello Radu,

Wiris support stated the following:
As that setting controls how the document is saved, which is something MathType has no control over, I still believe that this issue is on Oxygen's side.

It may prevent us from migrating from MathFlow to MathType. When does Oxygen plan on moving MathFlow's status from deprecated to retired?

Thanks,

Hello Ahmed,

The original MathFlow support which is now deprecated was built entirely by us (the Oxygen team). We kept it deprecated (and did not remove it) because the Wiris team asked us not to remove the MathFlow support in Oxygen as long as they have users who benefit from it. We do not have immediate plans to remove this support, there are still common Oxygen + Wiris clients using it, but we also do not maintain it if bugs are found.

Now back to this remark:
As that setting controls how the document is saved, which is something MathType has no control over, I still believe that this issue is on Oxygen's side.
As far as I know Wiris chose for their new integration to use the Oxygen Preferences->"Editor / Edit Modes / Author / MathML" page "External application" setting and point Oxygen to an application that it should run when it detects users want to edit the MathML equation. That application is theirs, there is nothing stopping them from adding a new parameter to the application like "-charValues" in order to instruct their started process that the MathML must be saved in a certain way. Oxygen from what I remember just takes the MathML produced by their external application and inserts it back in the XML document.
