Responsive WebHelp with external HTML files

Post by csquires »

I have a project that includes a number of html files that come from another team. These files will never be converted to dita butI need to include them in my responsive webhelp output.

The problem I'm facing is when I include them in the transform the header and footer information that allows them to open within the "webhelp" is not added so they open as plain html (not search, toc, index, etc).

Is there a way to include these files so they are also processed by the transform to integrate them into the webhelp output (header, footer, search, index, etc.).

Thanks,
Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for your feedback.
In the WebHelp Responsive output the external HTMLs are not considered part of the documentation, so no further processing is done for this files (there is no header, footer, etc.).
I have added an improvement request to our issue tracking tool to analyze the possibility to process also external HTML files. This issue will be further analyzed by our development team.

Thanks,

In the meantime I'll see if I can't figure out a way to do this.

Hi everyone,

We would also like this feature. In our case, we have a set of FAQ articles that are curated in Stack Overflow Enterprise, and we would like to include them in our WebHelp Responsive output with the full look and feel (WebHelp CSS applied, navigation panel on left, and so on).

Hi Ionela,

Can you please share the ID for this enhancement request?

Hello,

The issue ID is WH-2352.

This is a non-trivial modification, mainly for the following reasons:
  • In WebHelp, the TOC is generated directly within the topic's HTML. To include it, the plugin must modify the external HTML.
  • The same goes for other components such as the breadcrumb or navigation links that also need to be embedded.
  • The plugin must also merge default's CSS, publishing template CSSs and the external HTML styles, to ensure a consistent look and feel, which can lead to conflicts or display issues.

Regards,
Julien
