Grammar check

Post by Johann »

Hello Oxygen,

According to this documentation: https://www.oxygenxml.com/doc/versions/ ... ecker.html, can you confirm that only spell checking is available in Web Author? No grammar checking?
I'm asking this question because the language-tool plugin is mentioned. I don't know if this plugin is based on https://languagetool.org/ which offers the grammar check.

Regards,

Johann

Hello,

There is a "LanguageTool Support Plugin" available for Oxygen Xml Web Author:

Hello,

I already use this plugin but according to your documentation and according to what I see during my tests, this plugin only performs spell checking and no grammar checking.

One of our customer is looking for a grammar checker so I would like to confirm with you that the language-tool plugin is only a spell checker plugin and that today there is no solution in Web Author for grammar checking?

Hello,

Here is how I tested LanguageTool plugin's grammar checking:
After uploading the plugin to Web Author, I made a topic where I set xml:lang="it_IT" and added some grammar errors.
I was a bit discouraged because, of the errors I added, none were getting highlighted.
Then I tried the same text on https://languagetool.org/ and seeing that it would not highlight them there either, brought some courage back.

Then I made a topic for Spanish, where I set xml:lang="es_ES" and added the following text:

Las casa son bonitas. La agua está fría. Yo comiste una manzana.
(I first confirmed that https://languagetool.org/ would find errors in this text)

So, the answer would be, when using LanguageTool plugin for spellchecking, it does indeed perform some grammar checking - as much as LanguageTool is able to provide.
The documentation could use some improvement, thank you for reporting!

Best regards,
Andrei

To clarify a bit, it is indeed based on LanguageTool.
It was originally intended to provide spell checking for additional languages, grammar checking was a nice bonus, not something we focused on at the time. [1]
When you use the plugin, if you are editing in the originally supported languages [2], the default spellchecker is still the one used, not Languagetool.
The only overlap is for Spanish, where LanguageTool plugin will win.
There is however no indication of which spellchecker is providing the results.

Can you tell us which languages you wanted to use grammar checking for?
We could try and provide a plugin that would set LanguageTool for English for example.

We've registered the feature request in our internal issue tracker and we'll notify you when we have a solution.
Can you provide a time-frame for when you would need a solution for grammar checking?
