oXygen grinds to a halt under Mac OS X 10.14 Mojave
Hi,
I'm running Mac OS 10.14 (release 18A389), which is most likely, a GM.
oXygen starts up but the CPU usage ranges between 150 and 500%. Larger files are difficult to open — and some don't open at all.
Is there an update in the works? If yes, I'd be happy to test on my end. I do realize that Mojave hasn't been officially released yet, but we're very close.
All best,
Toma

Re: oXygen grinds to a halt under Mac OS X 10.14 Mojave
Hi,
It's unlikely that Mojave is the problem here. High CPU usage, when opening files or doing only minor things, usually means Oxygen/Java is running out of heap memory. What files do you have open in Oxygen? Try to close everything and open just a few files. Do you see the same issue?
Enable memory status in the status bar, menu > Options > Preferences, Global, Show memory status. Check the memory usage in the status bar of the main window (bottom-right corner) during high CPU surges. Click the "garbage can" widget to force garbage collection and see updated memory usage. Note that this is just for investigation purposes, garbage collection is otherwise performed automatically.
Regards,
Adrian

Re: oXygen grinds to a halt under Mac OS X 10.14 Mojave
Hi Adrian.
yes, the problems persist even when I have only one small file open. Even with one simple XSL file open, the oXygen screen still occasionally freezes, I can't scroll, type, select or anything. This I think happens when the CPU skyrockets, but then after a while the CPU returns to normal and then I can continue using oXygen for a bit.
I don't know what to do with the memory usage info — it's impossible to see it properly because the numbers are occluded in the user interface, going over the numbers with a mouse shows the full numbers as in this screenshot

When the UI freezes, clicking on the garbage icon does seem to help. The screen unlocks but the effect is not permanent.
I have plenty of RAM on this computer (40GB).
All best,
Toma

Re: oXygen grinds to a halt under Mac OS X 10.14 Mojave
Hi,
By default on macOS Oxygen uses the default Java maximum heap of 25% of the system memory. So in your case, for 40GB Oxygen uses ~9GB. That is more than enough for most use cases, so it's not a real case of insufficient memory.
When the UI freezes, after it becomes at least slightly responsive, try sending us a report from Help > Report Problem. If it happens again, send another report (2-3 reports should be enough). We should be able to see a pattern if the issue is reproducible.

Adrian

I don't reproduce this issue, but I will investigate.I don't know what to do with the memory usage info — it's impossible to see it properly because the numbers are occluded in the user interface, going over the numbers with a mouse shows the full numbers as in this screenshot

Hi,
I was able to reproduce the memory usage info UI issue. I've logged it on our issue tracking system and it will be resolved in a future release.
Are you still experiencing high CPU usage and UI freezes?
Regards,
Adrian

Hello,
Just wanted to update this thread and mention that the memory status UI issue has been fixed in oXygen 22.
