tabbed windows all over the place

Post by Franck » Tue Jan 24, 2006 2:54 pm

Slightly annoying, but hard to pin down.

Since using version 7 (as opposed to the version just before it), I have noticed that from time to time, a tabbed window will suddenly float to its own frame, either on the side, or bottom of the frame where I normally open all my files.

Or like today, when opening a new file, it also got opened in its own frame rather than as a new tab. I have failed to reproduce the behaviour.

On the same subject, again, only from time to time, double clicking on a tab to expand it will cause the tab to detach and float either to the side or bottom. It is as if my mouse was slightly sticky, which it isnt'. It could be that the tabs are too sensitive and anything that looks like a click and grab gets acted on.

Cheers

Maybe you are doing a click and a slight drag. A click and drag on the title of an open editor does exactly that: on drop the editing area is split so that the dragged editor gets a new panel. It is helpful when you want to edit two files at the same time.

Please keep us informed if you can reproduce it.

reproducing the problem

Post by Franck » Tue Feb 07, 2006 12:09 pm

I am getting better at reproducing this, althought it sometime happens more often than other.

For info, I use a standalone oXygen 7.0 on windows 2000.
1) I open loads (6+) of files at the same time.
2) I open a mixture of xml, xsl and wsdl files at the same time (can't figure out if that's a factor)
3) I double click on the tab to maximize the editing window I am currently working on, click on another tab, double click again to go back to show the outline again, etc...

It seems that the main parameter is the number of tabs. If I open enough documents to fill the tab list and make the additional tabs icons (the 2 small triangles on the right hand side of the tabs) appear, the tabs suddenly becomes very sensitive to clicking. With less documents, I don't seem to be able to reproduce the problem.

There might be a veryyyy slight drag to my click (no more than 1-2 pixel), but that is enough to make the tab float. I have also run some tests with a fixed mouse, slow and fast clicks, slow and fast double clicks, and I cannot tie the problem to my way of clicking.

There might be additional conditions, but sometime, like last night, it was becoming bug-like, i.e very frequent and very annoying.

It is also possible that once the problem occurs, it occurs more consistently afterward, as if the tab were becoming more sensitive.

Let me know if there are any specific tests you'd like me to run.

Responses to mouse actions performed on the tab title do not depend on the editor type, so that cannot be a factor.

If you run <oXygen/> on Windows, is the ClickLock mouse feature enabled in Control Panel -> Mouse properties and the lock time is set to be very short ? I can reproduce the split editor only with ClickLock enabled. I will let you know if I can reproduce it without ClickLock.

Click lock is not an available option on my mouse properties. I do have the speed set to one tick faster than the average, and I have Acceleration set to medium, and I have Smart Move enabled.

I have checked the accessibility options as well, and I do not have anything related set up ther either.

It is worth noting that this doesn't happen with only a few files opened, and as far as I can tell, did not occur with the previous version of oXygen.

Also: the sensitive tab might be only the one on the further right of the tab list (I'll run more tests to check this out)

Thanks for looking into this.

In the Mouse properties dialog of my Windows 2000 I can find double click speed, motion speed, acceleration, but I can't find Smart Move.

Still no luck for me, but I will try more.

SmartMove seems to be a logitech mouseware option (see http://tinyurl.com/b6nr4). But I don't think this has any link to my problem

Hi Franck

We just managed to reproduce the reported behaviour.
It indeed happens when there are many tabs opened and you try to select one of the last tabs in the pane (a small mouse drag, even 1 pixel, and you end up docking an editor in the north part of the workspace).
We reported this bug to the third party Dockable Frameworks developers and will keep you up to date with their response.

Thanks for pointing this out,
Regards, Radu

Honestly,

I don't know how many guys there are in your support group, but you really beat every other support team I've ever dealt with in both efforts and results!

Thank you and well done, again, for the very fast turn around!
