How to Generate IDs

The documentation says that the Generate ID action:

Allows you to generate an unique ID for the element at caret position.

Furthermore it says:

All actions described above are available in the contextual menu, the DITA submenu of the main menu and in the Author custom actions toolbar.

However, when I configure toolbars, Author custom actions is not available. Nor is the action available in the DITA submenu.

Is this action still supported?

Hi,

The Generate ID action for editing DITA topics is only available in the contextual menu. So you can place the caret inside the element, right click and choose Generate ID for it.
We'll modify the user manual to state things more clearly.

Hello,

I am wondering if it is possible to use the Generate IDs option for a ditamap. The option is not proposed for selection when right-clicking on the <map> element in the Author mode.

What do you suggest I do to generate an ID at the map level?

Hi,

Indeed the ID generation action is not available for DITA Maps (it's only available for DITA topics). I'll add an issue on our side to allow for this.
Could you tell me more about your use case? Usually IDs are not generated that much in DITA Maps. Do you also generate IDs on topicrefs or only on the main <map> root?
Also, if you want I can give you some step by step instructions about adding your own Author action which invoked can add an ID to the current element when the DITA Map is opened in the Author visual editing mode.
