6.2 fails to create directory ~/.profile on Linux

6.2 fails to create directory ~/.profile on Linux
I notice that when 6.2 starts on my Linux box that it gripes about failing to create a directory called .profile in my home directory. It fails because there is already a file of that name present.
Does it matter that the directory isn't created? What's it for?
