Cannot open file by double-click if there is a space in path

Post by oraymond »

I have noticed in Oxygen v12 that I cannot open an xml file into Oxygen by double-clicking in Windows Explorer if there is a space in the pathname. I always get an error message saying the the "specified file does not exist" and it lists an erroneous path that contains duplicated and misordered directory names in the path name. Once I remove the spaces from the path name, there is no problem.

Note that Oxygen seems to have no problems with spaces in pathnames if I drag-and-drop an xml file into an open Oxygen window, or if I use the File-open menu.

Not a serious problem, but annoying none-the-less. Any plans for a fix?

Hello,

The problem seems to be a faulty file association on your system. We cannot reproduce this on our test systems after installing Oxygen.

On what version of Windows have you installed and are running Oxygen(Windows XP, Vista, 7)?
Oxygen is not associated by default with XML files. By what means did you associate it with XML files? Did you use the file association page during the Oxygen installation?

The easiest/cleanest way to fix this problem is to reinstall Oxygen in the same folder. Choose Proceed when asked if you want to upgrade the version installed in that folder. When arriving to the File Associations page from the installation wizard, make sure you select the XML extension before proceeding to the next page.

Windows XP (SP3). A corporate PC install, and no, the IT department guy apparently didn't associate xml files during the install. I had to associate them myself using the Folder Options/File Types menu in Windows Explorer. Are you saying that the Windows file association tool is faulty? I'll see if I can get the corporate IT guy back to re-install Oxygen..... :(

Hi,

You can also fix this problem in Folder Options/File Types if you prefer(select XML file type and press Change) or the Open with dialog(right click on an XML file in Windows Explorer and select Open With -> Choose Program). You'll arrive in the same Open With dialog.
In the Open With dialog press Browse, navigate to the Oxygen installation folder(e.g. C:\Program Files\Oxygen XML Editor 12) and select oxygen.exe. Select Oxygen XML Editor from the programs list, enable the option Always use the selected program to open this kind of file and press OK.

Yes, that's how I did it already. Still does not work with spaces in the path name.

That should have worked correctly. Maybe something went wrong somewhere.
Go back to the Options/File Types, select XML and press the Restore button. Then you can press Change and attempt to associate Oxygen again.
Did that make a difference?

OK, that's strange, that should have resolved the issue. Maybe the problem lies elsewhere.

Have you tried double-clicking an Oxygen sample(e.g. personal.xml in C:\Program Files\Oxygen XML Editor 12\samples) and the same thing happened?
If that worked, can you give an example of a path that didn't work?

Did you associate Oxygen in the same way with XSL files, or was it already associated since installation?
Does it do the same if you double click an XSL file(e.g. personal.xsl from the same samples folder)?

I have re-installed Oxygen 12 and this time I checked the option to associate xml files with Oxygen during the installation. Everything works fine now.

Maybe there is some disconnect between the MSWindows file association tool and Oxygen? Or maybe its just one of those unexplainable quirks of MSWindows?

I upgraded to oXygen 12 and am experiencing this same problem. I tried all of the suggested steps mentioned in this stream. There's definitely something amiss with oXygen - This is not a Windows problem.
Unfortunately I'm unable to reinstall through normal means. This is a corporate license that is imaged. All of the files I deal with are located in paths that contain spaces. This is a major annoyance for us. Any other suggestions?

Hello,

Does this happen only with .xml files or does it have the same problem with .xsl files?

With the help of oXygen support we were able to determine one additional step that must be take using the Windows Explorer - Folder Options/File Types procedure listed previously in this thread. After selecting the XML file type,
a) click on the Advanced button
b) select the Bolded action or the Open action
c) click Edit and make sure the %1 in the "Application used to perform action:" field is surrounded by double quotes (e.g. "%1").
This will make sure that spaces in the path or file names are handled correctly.
