Building from WEBDav

Post by jvazquez »

Hi,

I'm not sure if this can be done, but I'm trying to build from a DITA map. I open the map file from my WEBDav connection and then attempt to transform the map and it fails. Do I have to open all the files in the map to do the build or is there some other way of building the content?

Thanks.

Hello,

The DITA map and topics need to be local files. You should map the remote WebDAV repository to a local folder in the local filesystem and load the DITA map in Oxygen from the local folder.

Thanks for the quick response, Sorin. I'll have to do some research on mapping the repository to a local drive, but it makes sense to me.

Hello,

If your local computer runs Windows just use the built-in support of Windows: right-click on My Computer, select Map Network Drive, choose the Connect to a Web site option, enter the WebDAV repository URL. On Mac OS X I think it is something similar.

I mapped the drive successfully, but when I tried to open it in oXygen, it never saw past the top level of the drive, even though I was able to see the files in Windows Explorer. I would think that I should just be able to click Open and open any of the files in the connected folder.

Any ideas of what may be happening?

Thanks,

Does the dir command executed in a command line display the content of the mapped repository? If not the repository was not assigned a drive letter and is visible only as a network location which means it will not be accessible in the file browser dialog used for opening files in applications (any Windows application).

You can also open the files from the mapped repository by drag and drop from Windows Explorer to the Oxygen window.

Hi Sorin,

The dir command only shows the directories on the C drive in XP. In any case, looking at Explorer shows that it does not have a drive letter assigned. This is as you expected. Opening the files is not the problem here, but building a document requires accessing all the files referenced by a map and copying them to the local systems is not a solution that makes sense.

I'm at a loss about how to get the repository I'm using to interface with oXygen such that I can build a complex document without bringing the entire contents down locally.

I am sorry, for now I do not see a solution for transforming a DITA map when the map and topic files are not on the same computer as Oxygen.

Hi Julio,

We are working for Oxygen 13.1 on a solution to publish remote DITA Maps using the DITA OT bundled with Oxygen.
If you are interested in helping just contact us using the support email address and we'll try to provide you with an Oxygen 13.1 beta kit for tests.

Hi Radu,

I'll be happy to participate once I acquire a version 13 license. It's on my list of things to do.

Thanks for the offer.
