Possible to Perform DITA Topic Validation in Edit Topic Content Mode?

Post by dreifsnider »

Hi,

Is it possible to perform DITA topic validation for resolved topics when using the DITA Map with Resolved Topics framework (Edit Topic Content)?

For example, if a topic contains an invalid DITA element (for example <test>) in a topic and a user loads the DITA Map in the Edit Topic Content mode, it appears that Web Author does not throw a validation error for the invalid element.

Is it possible to have Web Author throw a validation error for the invalid element in the DITA topic?

Thanks!

Daniel

After further investigation, it appears that Web Author does throw a validation error if a user makes an edit in the same topic in Edit Topic Content that contains the invalid item.

However, we would like for Web Author to perform automatic validation for all topic contents when Edit Topic Content is loaded.

I have recorded the following video showing this behavior: https://sie.box.com/s/0f0irrn24qotf1fwp57k02rmsuziwv76

Thanks,

Hello,

The behavior you describe (as shown in the attached video) is by design. Otherwise, there would be a significant amount of content to validate if the validation were triggered from the start, potentially leading to performance issues.

Hi Cosmin,

Thank you for your response and for explaining that this is by design.

We understand this now and will inform our Web Author users of this.

Thanks!

Hello Daniel,
However, we would like for Web Author to perform automatic validation for all topic contents when Edit Topic Content is loaded.
We have logged an internal issue (WA-8221) regarding this (once editing begins, validation should be applied to all topics, not just the one being edited), and we will notify you once it is implemented.

Hi Cosmin,

Thank you for logging an internal issue for validating all topics.

My team is wondering if it would be possible to have two Edit Topic Content (Beta) options - one that would perform validation while loading the topic contents and another that wouldn't perform this validation.

If this wouldn't be possible, would it be possible for a user to manually run a validation scenario on the Edit Topic Content (Beta) mode, similar to how a user can a run a DITA Map Completeness Check with Batch validate referenced DITA resources in Oxygen XML Author.

We're seeing several instances of invalid content being inserted and we'd like to provide a way for our Web Author users to validate the entire contents of their DITA Map before committing their changes. It seems the only way for users to currently validate their topics is to open each topic individually and this isn't realistic as many of our DITA Maps contain 50+ topics.

Thanks,
Daniel
