Conditional content that varies between chapters

I have a piece of text that I want to say "when two X do a thing" or "when two Y do a thing" depending on whether that piece of text is in chapter X or Y. I know conditionals are used as a document-wide means of changing which content displays, but can individual chapters provide their own conditional specifications? Apologies if this is extremely basic: I'm having trouble getting anything meaningful with the search terms.
