publishing PDF with with a source file named *.bookmap fails. Why?

I try to publish a bookmap source document to PDF using DITA OT 1.7.5 and plugin dita2pdf2. It works out with a source file named alice.ditamap. After I rename alice.ditamap to alice.bookmap build fails. Why?

The specification states that all DITA Maps (and also Bookmaps) "should" have the "ditamap" extension:

Ideally the publishing engine should work no matter what extension is used for DITA Maps and Topics.
I also tested with DITA OT 1.8 and it has the same problem.

DITA OT 2.1 seems to work with the "bookmap" extension though. So the latest DITA OT release no longer has this problem.
