Upgrading from 12.1 to 12.2 on Mac

I'm a fairly new Mac user and maybe I have such a noob question that nobody bothered to explain this on the Oxygen download page or FAQ.

When I first got my Mac, somebody at work downloaded and installed oXygen 12.1 and input the company license. I have a folder called "oxygen" in my app folder and inside there is the oXygen.app file and a shortcut in the dock.

With most software I've used, I just check for new updates and click a button and the new files are downloaded and installed automatically. But with oXygen, a prompt said there was a new version and I had to go to the website and download it. OK so I did that and now there is a new "oxygen" folder in my downloads folder.

At this point I'm wondering if I should uninstall the 12.1 version before I do anything with the 12.2 folder. But the download page didn't mention anything about updating, it only said not to put two installations in the same folder. It also said to click the oxygen.app file. So reluctantly I clicked it and hoped that it would detect the older 12.1 installation and ask if I wanted to upgrade or replace it. But to my surprise it simply opened a new oXygen 12.2 window. Now I have version 12.1 in my apps folder and version 12.2 in my downloads folder. They both seem to work and the "about box" says it's licensed to my company.

But I certainly don't need two versions cluttering my hard drive, and I certainly don't want an installation in my downloads folder. Should I simply delete the original oxygen directory in my apps folder and then move the new oxygen directory from the downloads folder to the apps folder? If I do that then what about the license? Is the license stored in some kind of Mac registry so I don't have to worry about it? I'm a Windows guy so I'm not used to just deleting program files. I have always uninstalled old software. Maybe you don't install software on Macs, you just put a software.app file in the apps folder and it just works?

So bottom line is, should I delete the old oxygen directory in the apps folder and move the new one from the downloads folder to the apps folder? If so, will I have to re-enter the license key?

Hello,

All versions of Oxygen keep/look for the license key and configuration file in a common location from your user folder([user-home-folder]/Library/Preferences/com.oxygenxml). So it doesn't matter where an Oxygen installation is located or how many installations(even of varied versions) are on your system, they will all find the license and their corresponding options.

What you should know is that each version of Oxygen minor or major keeps its own configuration file and jumping from one version to another means you will encounter a different set of options for each version.

You can keep Oxygen wherever you like on your Mac, but the usual location is in the Applications folder. So, if you already have an older version there, first you should make sure you haven't left any files that you might still need inside its folder. Then remove this old Oxygen folder(Move to trash) from the Applications and move there the folder with the new version of Oxygen from the Downloads folder.
The license and the options are transparent to the location of the application, they will be automatically found.

It's true that on the download page it's not specifically mentioned that you should copy Oxygen to the Applications folder. But like I said before, this is just a guideline, a recommendation, not a requirement.

Thank you for your explanation. I really need to learn more about this Mac that was forced upon me at work. I'm starting to like it more but there is still much to learn.
