performance problem with 6.2 in comparision to 6.1
Hi,
I have a problem with performance with oxy 6.2 and java 1.5.0_05-b05. I used oxy 6.1 with java 1.42 and it seemed to be quite speedy and a good tool. ^.2 is also a good tool but opening files and browsing through folders seems to be very slow (going up a folder takes at least a second if not two). The debugger is again a good tool but it seems to have the same rolem with speed. I'm not convinced its necessarily a problem with oxygen rather than a combination of oxygen and java 1.5 orsomething ele on my pc. Is it possible to enable logging somewhere in oxy as I would like to identify why I'm experiencing this issue.
I have a 2.5 ghz machine with 1.5 gig ram..
BTW keep up the good work...
Regards,
crocked

Hello,
If you run <oXygen/> on Windows do you experience the performance problems with the kit that includes a Java VM ? The JVM will be used only by <oXygen/>, it will not be visible for all the other applications installed on your computer. If the kit that includes a Java VM works faster, comparable with version 6.1, then the problem is the version 1.5.0_05-b05 of the JVM.
Do you have text antialiasing enabled (Preferences -> Editor -> Aspect) ? It causes delays for some font families. Turn it off and see if the operation is faster.
Are you sure there are no other applications that slow the applications on your machine, like antispyware, firewall ?
If <oXygen/> performance does not improve please contact us at support at oxygenxml dot com to help you to enable logging.
Best regards,
Sorin

Hi,
I have the jvm already installed so I use the jvmless install. I checked my firewall and it seems I was blocking http access for oxygen. Now the file opening seems to be much quicker. I'll see if it improves the performance of the debugger as well but I suspect this was the problem. Just one question why is oxy requesting a http connection to the oxygen homepage at startup? The pc I'm on is internet connected but would this be a problem if it wasn't?
The font-antialiasing wasn't enabled. by the way.
Thanks,
crocked

Hello,
If the Automatic Version Checking option is enabled (Options -> Preferences -> Global -> Automatic Version Checking) <oXygen/> tries to connect to the website at startup to check if there is a newer version available and a popup dialog will notify you if you don't run the latest version. Any customer benefits of free upgrades to minor versions of the same family and customers who purchased also the maintenance pack option benefit also of upgrades to major versions. For example if you have a license key for <oXygen/> 6 you can use it with any 6.x.y version. So if your machine is not connected to the Net or you block the connections with a firewall the check will fail silently and you will not be notified about future versions of <oXygen/>.
Blocking connections of any kind (ftp, http, https) cannot slow file browsing / debugging. Did you also change other settings on your computer / in <oXygen/> before the speed improved ?
Best regards,
Sorin

Hi Sorin,
rechecked that by disabling access and as you say it doen't affect the speed at all.
Just seemed that way.. Sorry..
Thanks for telling me what it was it connecting to the internet for(I'm a little paranoid). I have the maintenance pack but check the website often enough as well. I think it may have been a problem with low disk space on my computer. I have recently moved several large folders out but I'm not sure if that could have been the cause of the problem or not. It seems to work fine now so thanks for your help
