Integrating disparate data sources

Cannot find a tuturial on how to take a PowerPoint presentation, an Excel spreadsheet, a requirements tool (DOORS), OPNET, and various documents and show the data elements these mediums have in common. Thought that was the power of XML since it is not a programming language. Does an XML parser create DOMs such that I can write the program that merges/integrates these disparate sources? Thanks so much. On a critical timeline to develop a metadata repository project.
