Don't expand all categories when opening Preferences
Personally I find it a little overwhelming to have every category expanded whenever I open Preferences. It would be nice if everything were collapsed. I'm much more comfy "drilling down" from a top-level list of categories than I am visually searching through a much longer list.
I don't know if this behavior is limited to certain platforms, but I am using Oxygen on a Mac running OS X 10.5 “Leopardâ€.

I think usually the users prefer to locate and select a panel in the tree quickly by looking at the names in the expanded tree. If the expanded tree seems overwhelming for you just type some characters from the name of the desired preference or preferences panel in the Search field at the top of the Preferences dialog. Typing some characters from the name reduces the tree to the nodes containing items with names that include the typed characters.
