WebHelp search improvements

Post by LPBC »

WebHelp via the Oxygen WebHelp plug-in has a particular search engine which is fairly good.

What if you also want phrase support, for example?

A concern has been raised that the JavaScript basis of the search may not scale well for a WWW implementation.

Are there ways to improve the search capability that comes with WebHelp?

Hello,

Finding an exact phrase is not supported yet in the Webhelp search. However entering all the words of the phrase in the Search text field ensures that the topics containing all the words will be listed at the top of the results list, and this comes pretty close to a search for an exact phrase.

What would the concern be exactly? That a very large set of HTML pages will slow down to a crawl the search in the browser at runtime, when the Search button is pressed? That the generation process of the JavaScript index database would take very long to build up at build time? In our experience neither should be a major concern. The generation process is only contingent upon the speed of parsing the set of HTML files, which is quite fast. The search at runtime also seems quite snappy, at least in our tests. Please let us know if it seems slow to you, and also specify the total size of the indexed HTML files (only the text part of the HTML files, excluding the images or other resources like CSS scripts linked in the HTML files).

Do you mean allowing for exact phrase search and building a binary index instead of the current JavaScript index? We do not have plans yet for improvements along these two directions. However we plan to add a WebHelp with Feedback for Mobile transformation to the three existing ones: WebHelp (the desktop version, for desktop browsers), WebHelp with Feedback (allowing user comments in a Wiki-style collaborative system), WebHelp - Mobile (the version for mobile devices, but without user comments).

Is exact phrase search supported now in Oxygen 18.1, specifically when using responsive webhelp?

Thanks,

Hi,

No, the phrase search is not available in oXygen WebHelp 18.1.

The good news is this feature will be included in the next oXygen WebHelp version which is scheduled to be released in April.
