Drop down list for type attribute on topicref element

In the content view when we try to add the type attribute for a topicref there seems a hardcoded list of values. Where is the content of the list defined and can they updated with new values? The reason for asking is some clients use FluidTopics and Zoomin for publishing. They have some custom values for the type attribute for defining attachments to their publications and the customer would like to have those values visible in the list.
