DITA PDF output with Index?

Post by piwiaus »

I have seen the earlier (2012) forum posts about oXygen using the standard Apache FOP and that this does not support index generation for PDF output of DITA documents. I have also seen that you have added an index tab for HTML help output. I have not located any announcement that you now natively support index generation for PDF outputs from DITA source files (hoping I may have missed something??).

If I am correct in all the above, is there any chance you might extend oXygen functionality in future to generate PDF indexes without us needing to buy another add-on?

(To be honest, I don't know how the DITA framework can claim to support book/PDF publishing without built-in support for indexing; but that is a separate soapbox issue! :) )

Hi,

Probably you've read some older threads.
Oxygen obtains PDF from DITA using the DITA Open Toolkit processor.
The processor has always had support to generate the index page using the commercial RenderX XEP as the FO processor.
And in Oxygen 15.2 we added the support for generating an index page using the default FO processor bundled with Oxygen (the Apache FOP processor).
So if you are using Oxygen 15.2 or newer you can generate an index page when publishing DITA content to PDF with the default FO processing.

If you are using DITA Open Toolkit separately, it officially added support for the generation in DITA OT 2.0 based on an issue we raised and fixed:
