Cannot see Oxygen in Eclipse

Post by brian »

1. I have never run Eclipse before. I just downloaded latest Eclipse 3.0 and it seems to run OK.

2. I have downloaded the Oxygen plugin and followed the instructions to unzip and put in the Eclipse plugins folder.

3. In Eclipse I can not see Oxygen, even after a reboot (just in case!).

4. I tried the solutions suggested in an earlier thread about deleting configuration files but that did not work.

5. From the same thread I tried the suggestion about using the config. manager but can see nothing there except Eclipse.

Can you offer a solution?

Hi Brian,

What happens if you open an XML file ?
If you look in the Window->Preferences dialog do you see an oXygen entry ?

Hi George,

If I double click on an XML file, or select open on the context menu, it opens in IE.

There is no entry for oxygen in the Preferences tree.

There is no entry in File Associations either, except for txt.

The only place it is visible is in the Help -> Plugin Details dialog where Oxygen appears right at the bottom as the last entry.

I have tried deleting everything, rebooting and starting all over again, but the effect is the same - no sign of Oxygen!

Any ideas?

Hi Brian,

We will prepare an Eclipse 3.0 with oXygen preinstalled for Windows and let you know as soon as that is available.

Hi George,

Thanks for your response - I look forward to hearing from you. Can you give me some indication what time frame we are talking about? Days, weeks, months? Do you think it is a problem with Eclipse, <oXygen/>, or my environment?

As my evaluation key was generated last Friday, will I still be able to have the full 30 days or can I get another key?

I am very interested in using the Eclipse platform for many associated tasks as well. Will I still be able to add other plugins to the pre-installed version you are intending to produce? Is it different from the stand-alone version?

I have read elsewhere, unfortunately I can not remember where, that the stand-alone version of <oXygen/> lacks some of the functionality of the Eclipse plugin version, is this correct, and if so, what are the differences? I have not had chance to do any investigation yet.

Thanks

Brian

We will try to have it ready today, otherwise it should be ready tomorrow.

Contact us at support@oxygenxml.com if you need a new trial license and we will send you one.

The preinstalled version means Eclipse 3.0 with oXygen XML Editor plugin in its plugins tested already on our machines. You can add anything to that. The standalone version of oXygen is something different. - it is a Swing based product while the Eclipse plugin is SWT based.
I have read elsewhere, unfortunately I can not remember where, that the stand-alone version of <oXygen/> lacks some of the functionality of the Eclipse plugin version, is this correct, and if so, what are the differences? I have not had chance to do any investigation yet.
The core features are the same, it is the same core that is used in both the standalone version of oXygen and in the Eclipse plugin. There are some differences in both directions mainly due to the different framework used for the GUI (SWT for the Eclipse plugin and Swing for the standalone nersion). Sure the standalone version cannot benefit from features added by different Eclipse plugins but the oXygen features are more or less the same. A notable thing however is the tree based editor that can be used only in the standalone version.

BUT you do not have to worry about these differences as the same license works with both the Eclipse plugin and with the standalone version so you can use both of them.

Thanks very much George, I have got that now and it seems to be working. It asked for my key, and I can see <oXygen/> and use it to open XML files.

I am rather concerned that I was unable to follow the simple instructions and make it work though. Can you tell me what is the problem. Is it the software or is it my procedure? Did you have to do something different from just adding the <oXygen/> files to the plugin folder?

Regards

Hi Brian,

I only unpacked Eclipse 3.0 and oXygen and then pack them together.

George
