oXygen newbie looking to quickly create outline content

I'm an oXygen and DITA newbie, but want to apply both for a variety of projects I manage and/or influence. Ask me if you're interested in my experience/background/motivation for this, I'd be happy to share.
But I first want to get started by creating a relatively-simple outline (which happens to be a product test plan for a software system, as it were), and instead of using Microsoft Word's Outline feature to do this (which I mastered in a previous lifetime but have long since forgotten), I'd rather "cut my teeth" with oXygen, assuming this is feasible.
I'm browsing through a variety of quick-start guides, tutorials, videos, and similar helpful things (quite impressive) but have yet to see a "this is a good way to start creating an outline for your document" reference.
Does anyone know of a good artifact/link/tutorial to help specific for this?
In the meantime I'll be searching for something and/or just trying to teach myself along the way. I have a deep software and systems technical background (again, in a previous life) so hopefully I won't find it too daunting.
