Hi,

I've solved the problem - it was memory related.  I increased the page file size
on my WinXP laptop and then set the memory available to the built-in FOP in
<oXygen /> to 1000MB => success

http://xml.apache.org/fop/running.html#memory describes a few things that may
help others with the same problem.
