Hello,

I was wondering, what is the "Eclipse Map" used for? I have been able to create an eclipse plugin using a standard DITA-OT map, but am wondering if I should be using the eclipse map?

Good question.

Actually the DITA 1.2 specification does not mention it at all.
Eclipse Map is a DITA specialization (which comes as a bundled DITA OT plugin) which is intended to be used to produce Eclipse Help.
Besides the names of the tags which are intended to be more Eclipse-oriented it also comes with a bunch of stylesheets which overwrite certain aspects in the original stylesheets used to produce Eclipse Help:

OXYGEN_INSTALL_DIR/frameworks/dita/DITA-OT/demo/eclipsemap/xsl

I cannot find any documentation about this specialization, maybe you should ask around on the DITA Users List.
