How do you use the debugger?

I've always just used the debugger to test output, and for the handy feature of clicking on the output and having the source/XSL file go to the line that was responsible for the item I clicked on.
But there are lots of things that look extremely useful on the bottom of the debugger, but I don't know how to use them. I've looked at the help file, but it's a little too formal in its language. It would be much more helpful if it gave examples like, “Suppose you have problem X, and you've tried to solve it using your usual methods with no success. This is where feature Y can save you…â€
I know this is a pretty vague question, but the biggest obstacle to my using the debugger is a lack of direction. There are a ton of specialized Views for debugging, and when I look at the lot of them I've no idea where to start. If anyone has any advice for good starting points, or just general random tips, I'm in need of your wisdom!
