DITA to XLIFF support?

Hi there,

I'm about to start looking in to ways of providing .dita content in XLIFF format. Just curious, is there any functionality build into Oxygen to convert ditamaps to XLIFF - I can't see anything.

If not, I'd love to see this as a new feature, if possible.

Thanks, Ryan

Hi Ryan,

There is no built in functionality in Oxygen for this.

There seems to be a DITA OT plugin which does that:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ditaxliff/files/

so you might want to check it out.

Steps to install a new plugin in the DITA OT:

http://www.oxygenxml.com/doc/ug-oxygen/ ... lugin.html

There is also a commercial product called Swordfish which does this.

Maybe you should also ask around on the Yahoo Groups DITA Users List, there might be other tools available for this.

Radu

Hi,

I am testing a trial version 18.1 for the company I work for and I understand it does support it now.

Only I am having a hard time to find documentation, video or any other media that would help with the dita <--> xliff roundtrip process.

Would anyone have a hint?

Thanks,

VitorH

Hi,

Besides what I already answered on the thread we do not know much about DITA to Xliff and back.
All commercial CMSs have support for translation this but Oxygen out of the box does not have support for helping to convert DITA to XLiff.
You may want to register on the Yahoo Groups DITA Users List and ask there, see how everybody is doing the conversion.
In my past discussions with people, either they were using a CMS which had this functionality or they were using Swordfish. The DITA to XLiff DITA OT plugin is quite old and unreliable.

Radu

Thanks a mill, Radu.

I am using the Dita OT Scenario.

I was able to export the Dita after profiling it according to the product, audience I wanted and was able to export to XLIFF. I pseudo translated the XLIFF, checked for welformedness (it's ok). But don't know the steps to pull the xliff back in.

Besides Yahoo, is there a link to Support at OxygenXML that I could use? The company is very serious about buying it?

I will try Yahoo meanwhile.

Hi,

Our Oxygen XML tech support email address is this one: support@oxygenxml.com.
But when it comes to DITA and XLiff even if you contact us via email, we cannot provide another answer than the one I gave you. As an XML editing tool Oxygen does not have this DITA to XLiff and back feature included. That's why I suggested the DITA Users List, there are lots of DITA users registered there and they may tell you about the various ways in which they are handling translations.

Radu

I'm starting to look into this now a little more seriously - is this going to be another feature like Git plugins that takes many years to roll out?

XLIFF is the standard for TM XML, is there anything else out there right now? How about DITA, that's a standard too? So...?

Hi Michael,

We do not have precise plans to implement a DITA to XLiff and back conversion in Oxygen. If at some point we find the time and human resources we might consider implementing this either as a plugin or built into Oxygen.
We have not received many requests from our end users to implement such a conversion, possibly because the translation agencies receive the DITA content and give the translated DITA content back, without the need for the end user to convert to XLiff and back.
Recently we started working on an Oxygen plugin:

https://github.com/oxygenxml/Translatio ... ge-Builder

which can be used to detect the DITA resources which have changed between two versions and to pack those resources to a ZIP file which can be sent to the translator.

Radu

Hello everyone,
You can use SDL Trados Studio 2017 to convert between DITA and XLIFF.
Thanks!
