Outline repr. similar to DITA Map for other XML Schema?

To paraphrase the manual:
"Oxygen's DITA Maps Manager View presents maps in a table-of-contents manner allowing the user to easily navigate the referred topics."
This kind of DITA map support/representation with all the outlining features (move/collapse/expand) is actually very useful.
Now let's suppose someone wanted to define his own XML Schema; something along the lines of a simplified/modified DITA.
Would it be possible to have a similar Map view (an editable outline of all topic files referenced from a "master list") in Oxygen for this hypothetical XML Schema?
(I am not talking about a DITA specialization here, but rather about a completely new schema.)
In other words: I wonder if the DITA map view is "hardwired" to the DITA-OT or could be used for another purpose - and how I would do this.
I would be grateful for suggestions from users or syncRO Soft.
