Can I categorize topics for webhelp outputs?

Post by shannonxtreme »

I'm authoring API documentation in markdown for output as both PDF and webhelp. I really want to organize the topics by the broad functionality of the APIs.

Current DITA map structure:

Code: Select all

- map/API Documentation
	- map/Overview
	- map/Getting Started
	- map/Tutorials
	- map/Reference
		- [category1]
			- topic 1
			- topic 2
		- [category2]
			- topic 3
			- topic 4
What I really want is for a user to click the Reference tile on the main page and be taken to a similar landing page with the categories as tiles.

Is this possible?

Also what would I use to categorize the topics? More ditamaps? Feels so messy.

Any advice and tips would be appreciated.

Hi

If we correctly understood your question, you would like to have a similar tiled layout also for topics.
Unfortunately, this is not possible by default, using the current implementation of WebHelp, as there is no template that you could use for that.
However, I've just logged an improvement request in our internal improvements tracking system to make it possible to have custom layouts for topics. We will notify this thread when/if this will be implemented.

Meanwhile, you could indeed try performing your own customization for the PDF output.
