Best Practices for Managing Citations within DITA documents?

Prior to switching to Oxygen, I wrote documents in Microsoft Word and used an external citation manager like Mendeley, Zotero, or Endnote to gather and organize my references. I installed a MS Word plugin to be able to have convenient access to my references while writing and to insert inline citations like (Smith, 2018, p. 4) and a complete bibliography at the end of the document.
Is there an equivalent workflow when writing DITA documents in Oxygen? Do people somehow use Oxygen to organize their references? If not, is there a convenient way to cite references in Oxygen maintained with one of the citation managers I mentioned? Using Oxygen, can I access a database or file of my references? Can I define a citation style in Oxygen?
