DITA-OT logging: fop warnings

Hi,

I started to take a closer look on the logging from FOP when creating a PDF with DITA-OT. It turned out that these are very valuable hints like
- The contents exceed the available area
- Unresolved ID reference found.
- Unsupported feature
- Unknown font

The problem is that these messages are currently not displayed as single entries in the "Transformation problems" window.
Thus, I have to scan manually the DITA-OT log ignoring the lines "Rendered page xxx"

Is there a way to let these warnings appear in the other window as well? I found in another thread that you already scan the OT logging for FOP errors. So it should be easy to add warnings as well!?

Thanks and regards,
Patrik

Hi Patrik,

Honestly about 3-4 years ago I added an internal issue to gather all FOP warnings + errors in the other tab. But after it was done, somehow I considered that FOP was very verbose, had lots of warnings like the one about the contents exceeding the available area, and some end users may be frightened by all these warnings. So right now we only present separately the lines starting with [fop] [ERROR].
One possibility would be for us to add a setting to also present the fop warnings in the separate errors list. If you agree I could add an internal issue for this.

Radu

Hi Radu,

thanks, a setting would be great.

And I understand that these messages are often somewhat frightening and hard to understand. But for me all of them were correct and the PDF now looks much better because I have solved all of them...

Patrik

Hello,

In the recently released oXygen 19.1 we added a new option in the DITA / Logging preferences page called Show the following types of messages in a new tab. This section allows you to specify which types of messages will be displayed in separate tabs in the message panel at the bottom of the editor if a DITA transformation results in errors or warnings. You can choose whether or not to display the following types of messages:
  • DITA-OT errors
  • DITA-OT warnings
  • DITA-OT info
  • FOP errors
  • FOP warnings
  • FOP info
  • XSLT problems
Best wishes,
