May I suggest that SyncRO Soft produce a "light" version of Author for non-XML users? I envisage a version that has basic functionality of:
- track changes and commenting
- text search
- tag view options
- character map
- document editing functions
... and various text formatting icons as per the standard Author, but no other functionality related to transformations, schemas or stylesheets.

I'm building up a business whose clients are familiar with Microsoft Word, and it'd be good for business by offering my clients an affordable version of Author that lets them view and edit XML that I produce, and not have much other functionality. Can something be produced with a retail price of under USD100?

If we will receive a sufficient number of requests in this direction probably we will consider this. Please note that it is not a one week project because introducing a new product comes with all the overhead associated with any product.
Right now there are available a few options to get a reduced version of the oXygen XML Author
* you can use a "Startup" plugin that can filter out different actions and components from oXygen. Basically this receives callbacks when oXygen creates actions, menus, toolbars, views, etc. and you can decide what is created and what is not created.
* you can use the Author Component that we made available. This provides the Author editing mode as a Java component together with a couple of side views and this can be integrated in an application. The licenses for Author Component cost half the price for the oXygen XML Author product.
