XQuery and Berkeley DBXML

Hi all. I realize this is a pretty far-out feature request, so feel free to say "Marginal" and then explain to me how I can do it myself.
Stylus Studio has XQuery integration with Berkeley DBXML (http://www.stylusstudio.com/dbxml.html). I think this is kind of nifty, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how an XQuery editor/environment gets connected with a database/datasource. Does this happen in the oXygen plugin architecture? Do they talk with each other over HTTP?
