Charachter Display Problem

Hallo,

I use a keyman keyboard to write the characters of my mother tongue in ANY windows program. However, oxygen does not display such characters, instead it gives me a square.

The characters are Latin based, but witht the following features:
- "normal vowels" AND "vowels with dots under"
- both types of vowels do get tone marks (accent signs)
- the tilde sign is also written on TOP of some vowels and consonants.
- two types of the letter "n": (1) free (2) with a dot on TOP

My aim is to use the tamplates for easy build of personal xml-based corpus data.

How do I get over this problem:?:

Hi,

Please use a font that knows how to render the characters you enter.
To select the font go to Options->Preferences->Editor->Font.

Best Regards,
George

Dear all,

I have this same problem, but the issue does not seam to be font. I have several fonts displaying correctly and entering this unicode characters with other tools works.

What could the issue be? is there something I should set?

thanks
Pietro

Dear Pietro,

Sorry for the delay. Could you give us a screenshot with how this looks on your side? Are you editing XML using the Text/Grid or Author editing modes?

Regards,
Radu

sorry also for my delay, unfortunately I do not get notifications from this forum.

I would be glad to be able to give you a screenshot, if there was anything to display! with keyman activated and the ethiopic keyboard as well as a font able to display ethiopic I simply get the letters as I type them on the normal keyboard.

I work in text mode.

To type በ in text edit I type b+a and so for all the letters. in Oxygen I get "ba" whichever the keyman keyboard is.

This is text ethiopic text entered in oXygen either copying it from textedit where keyman input works or with other imput methods.

Thanks a lot!
Pietro

Hi,

Your problem seems to be different than the one discussed in this old thread. When a square is presented instead of the actual character, that means the selected font cannot represent that character (the font does not support characters from that range).
From what you're describing you have an input source problem, not a character display problem, since you cannot input/type a character, but you can paste such characters in the editor and they display correctly. The input source interaction depends a lot on the platform and the Java support.

1. On what platform are you using Oxygen (Windows, Mac, Linux) and what OS version?
2. What version and build of Oxygen are you using (Help > About)?
3. What version of Java is Oxygen using (Help > About, System properties, java.runtime.version)
4. What's the name of the input source (or keyboard setting) that you are using in the OS?

Regards,
Adrian

1. Mac OS X el capitan
2. oxygen xml editor 17.1, build 2015111718
3. java.runtime.version 1.8.0_60-b27
4. Keyman Tauvlesoft Beta for Mac OS X

Thank you very much!

Pietro

Hello,

Thank you for providing additional details.

Regarding 4. (Keyman Tauvlesoft Beta for Mac OS X), I'm afraid we cannot guarantee the functionality of third party keyboards/input sources with Oxygen. Furthermore, the Keyman software for OS X is in the beta stage, so bugs and limited support for some applications are to be expected. In all likelihood the Keyman software may not support Java applications (like Oxygen). You may want to contact the Keyman developers and clarify this (are Java apps supported?).

Have you tested the standard OS X keyboards? Did you encounter issues with them in Oxygen?

You might have luck using the Keyman software with the distribution of Oxygen that runs on the legacy Java SE 6. The native integration with the OS was better for old versions of Java (6 and older), since these have been developed and tested by Apple themselves.
Get the Mac OS X 10.6 and later (Requires Java SE 6) download of v17.1. Note that it requires the legacy Java for OS X to be installed.

Regards,
Adrian
