Font and display issues on Ubuntu 8.10 with Oxygen 10

Since I upgraded Oxygen to 10.0 and Ubuntu to 8.10, the font often gets garbled - irrespective of the transparency settings I choose, and no matter what font I select.

Here's a screenshot:

Scrolling around back and forth sometimes produces readable text, but the annoyance is really too much ... any idea what might cause this?

Thanks,

Hello,

The video driver is not used correctly by the Java virtual machine on some Linux machines. You should add the parameter -Dsun.java2d.pmoffscreen=false in the startup script and restart Oxygen.
