Hello,

I updated to version 23.0 and have noticed performance issues when opening projects. In previous versions, projects would open almost instantaneously (I still have version 22.1 installed to verify that they still open quickly). It takes about 15-20 seconds to open a project in version 23.0. Is this typical for the new version? Is there something I can do to speed this up?

On what operating system are you working?
Whenever you open a project in Oxygen, if there were previous files opened in that project they will be re-opened. So usually it's not the project switch which is slow but re-opening the last files that were opened when you worked with that project. Do you usually have many files opened in a certain project? Maybe a large DITA Map which needs to be re-opened in the DITA maps Manager view?
On our Oxygen 23 downloads page if you go to the tab corresponding to your operating system there are two installation kits available, one with Java OpenJDK 15 and one with Java SE 1.8. The default one should be the one with OpenJDK 15. Can you try to download and install instead the other kit, the one which comes with Java SE 1.8? Because maybe Java 15 is slower and this might explain the slow down.

I am running Windows 10. Originally I installed the installation kit with Java OpenJDK 15 (which was the default). I uninstalled this version and installed the kit with Jave SE 1.8 (which I see is now the default ). This version works much better! The projects now open quickly again as they had in version 22.1.

To expand on the issues I was experiencing, it was not just opening projects that were slow. It was also very slow when creating a new project, so this issue was unrelated to the number of files that were open. I also found minor delays when running transformations, such as clicking buttons to run the transformation. It was less than a 1/2 second delay, so while noticeable, it wasn't as frustrating as the project issue.

Thanks for confirming the problem is specific to using Java 15. I added an internal kit to look further into this. We also made changes on our web site to offer by default the Oxygen kit which is bundled with Java 1.8.
How long were those delays when creating a project? Would you be willing to help us further by installing an Oxygen + Java 15 to a separate location, enabling full logging in it in order for us to maybe determine where the slowdown occurs? If so, maybe you can contact us (support@oxygenxml.com) and I can give you details about how to enable full debug in Oxygen.

As an update, we released Oxygen 23.1 which should no longer have this slowdown, no matter what Java version it is bundled with (1.8 or 15).
