In XMetal when we opened a “Read Only” topic it had a gray background. It made it easy to keep topics straight when viewing multiple versions.
We've now changed to Oxygen authoring tool and I’ve looked all over Oxygen and in their online “help,” but I don’t think I know the correct terminology to find what I need.

Hi,

With that CMS are you using Oxygen?
Oxygen has APIs which can be called by a CMS to make it read-only. Indeed if the editing area is made read-only this does not change by default the background of the opened XML documents. There is a small lock icon which appears on the editor tab and editing stops working inside the document. Potentially using our API changing the document background color could be done but it would require extra customization by the CMS vendor who implements the connector with Oxygen.
But in a way, taking into account the fact that you open read-only documents to read them, it's easier to read black foreground text on a white background instead of reading black text on a gray foreground.
