Webhelp feedback installation issue

I've tried to setup »webhelp feedback« for Docbook following Configuring the Comment Database for DocBook WebHelp Classic with Feedback and the instructions being given in the generated webhelp output tree.
I installed / configured the prerequisites being mentioned in Oxygenxml's documentation:
-mysql server including configuration of a separate database "webhelp" and a user "webhelp" supplied with appropriate GRANTs.
-php7 libs including mysql and ldap support
-write acces for the web process user to the /var/www/html/... config directory
The installation worked smoothly: All required prerequisites showed up as being present and I was able to configure both the mysql database and Ldap.
I could verify the existence of three Mysql tables comments, users and webhelp being generated by the installer. The generated feedback/resources/php/config/config.php showed plausible content.
However all I see on my webhelp test pages is a pulsating ajax-loader.gif image. Hitting either »Log In« or »Sign up« gets silently ignored. Biggest problem: I do not see any related logging output (Apache logs) whatsoever when hitting each of these buttons. Following Testing Your WebHelp Classic with Feedback System did not help either.
I've also fiddled with different LDAP settings using either anonymous, user and proxy and corresponding changes regarding user and password. There was no observable change. My impression: The problem may be related to somthing very stupid?
My System: Oxygenxml 18.1 Editor / Eclipse, Ubuntu 16.04 x86_64, Apache 2.4.18 , php 7.0.13 including packages php7.0-ldap and php7.0-mysql.
The originating document is of type <book> / Docbook 5.0.
