[bug] Pasting into oXygen 17.1 on Mac - content always pasted twice

Hi,

I'm experiencing a bug in Oxygen 17.1 on Mac OS 10.11.2.

Whenever I try to paste content into oXygen — regardless of whether from a different app, or from within oXygen, the content is pasted twice.

Any idea on how to fix this?

All best,
Toma

pasting the same content into a different application works, so this really is isolated only to oXygen.

Hi Toma,

Did this problem show up at some point or was it always present?
So no matter from what application you copy (even from Oxygen), when you paste you get double content.
You paste using the keyboard shortcuts, right?
If instead of using the keyboard shortcuts you right click and use the Paste contextual menu action do you get the same problem?

A couple of other questions:

1) What precise Oxygen 17.1 build ID do you have? You should find this information in the Help menu->About.
2) There are two Oxygen 17.1 XML Editor kits available for download on Mac, one contains Java 1.8 embedded and the other one works with the Java 1.6 installed on the Mac computer:

https://www.oxygenxml.com/xml_editor/do ... ?os=MacOSX

Do you remember what kit you installed? If not, in the Help menu you can use the "Report Problem" action to report to us all your Java settings, I'm interested in the "java.version" parameter value.

Regards,
Radu

Dear Radu,

sorry for the delay in getting back to you. I've been traveling.

I've just installed a fresh copy of oXygen with embedded Java on 10.11.4, oXygen 17.1 build 2016032212, java version 1.8.0_72. I've had this problem for a while, I honestly don't remember when it started (probably several weeks ago) but I never got around to reporting.

Your question about the shortcuts made me realize that the problem occurs only when I paste using the shortcut. If I paste using the menu, the content is pasted properly, and not doubly.

All best,
Toma

Hello,

I suspect this may be a Java 8 shortcut key problem. We had issues with some specific shortcut keys in the past, Cmd+Shift+Comma (Toggle Comment), but only in Java 7 and 8.

1. What keyboard layout (keyboard input source) do you have configured on your Mac (System Preferences > Keyboard, Input Sources)?

2. In Oxygen, are you using the default keyboard shortcut for Paste (Cmd+V)?
If not, what exact keys are you pressing?

3. Do you have any other actions assigned to the same shortcut? You can check in menu > Options > Menu Shortcut Keys.

Regards,
Adrian

Dear Adrian,

the issue seems to occur only with certain keyboard layouts. For instance, when I use my own custom-made keyboard layout or Apple's Greek Polytonic, the content gets pasted twice. When I use Apple's German keyboard layout, the content gets pasted once.

Unfortunately, I can't simply start using the German keyboard layout, because I rely 90% of the time on my heavily customized keyboard layout which contains Cyrillic, Latin, various combining Unicode diacritics etc. So it is really essential for my work.

Furthermore, the problem is definitely on the pasting side of things: the content in the copy buffer is as it should be, it's only the shortcut CMD-V that screws things up in oXygen. That's the shortcut I am using, and no other shortcut is assigned to it, because that's a paste-shortcut across the system.

I've been using my custom keyboard layout and Greek polytonic for years, but this issue with pasting into oXygen is a recent one.

All best,
Toma

Hi Toma,

Thank you for providing additional details in order to test this. We were able to reproduce the issue with the Greek Polytonic keyboard layout.
This only happens with the distribution of Oxygen that bundles Java 8, OS X 10.8 and later ( Includes Java SE 8 ). So, it seems to be a Java 8 specific problem.
I've logged this on our issue tracking tool to be investigated and hopefully avoided for this distribution. This thread will be notified when a bugfix becomes available.

Meanwhile, a simple workaround for this problem is to download and use the alternative distribution of Oxygen that requires and uses the legacy Java SE 6, Mac OS X 10.6 and later (Requires Java SE 6) (second download) from Download oXygen XML Editor - OS X
Please see the Requirements section from the download page for instructions on downloading and installing Java SE 6 (Java for OS X from Apple).

Adrian

Dear Adrian,

are you close to fixing this bug?

The reason I'm asking is that the workaround you suggested (using the version requiring Java SE 6) has turned out to be quite cumbersome, because that version of oXygen does not support xProc, and also I can't use it to connect with eXist, so I am left with having to use two different installations of oXygen for different tasks, which, as you can imagine, is less than ideal.

All best,
Toma

Hi,

This issue has not yet been resolved in v18.0. We have also tested with Java 8u92 (latest at this time) and it does not resolve the problem.
The problem may yet be with Java 8 and that specific input source (Greek Polytonic). We will have to investigate further.

Adrian

Hello,
has this issue been resolved, because I am experiencing a similar problem: when pasting content in Greek Polytonic I cannot insert content or tags further as anything I type (no matter where my cursor is, close to the pasted text) is typed inside the pasted part.

I don't know if what you describe is the same or a different issue, but my original issue has definitely not be resolved.

Hi,

This issue (with the Greek Polytonic input method) is a Java 8 issue and it has not been resolved in the latest updates of Java 8. As long as Oxygen is running with Java 8 (which it requires) you will still encounter this issue in Oxygen. AFAIK this issue has been resolved in Java 9. However, Oxygen (until v20.1) does not yet officially support Java 9 or later.
While it is possible to run Oxygen 20 (or 20.1) with Java 9 (or 10), we currently do not support and cannot recommend this setup. The issues you may encounter in this setup are far worse than the issue reported here, so IMHO it's not worth it.

Adrian

Hi,

I just wanted to update this thread with the information that Oxygen supports OpenJDK since v21.0 (OpenJDK 11 in v21.0 and OpenJDK 12 in v21.1). These versions with OpenJDK 11 and later resolve this issue.

You can now download Oxygen distributions that bundle OpenJDK:
Oxygen XML Editor / macOS 10.11 and later (Includes OpenJDK)
Oxygen XML Author / macOS 10.11 and later (Includes OpenJDK)
Oxygen XML Developer / macOS 10.11 and later (Includes OpenJDK)

Adrian
