Add a new document type

Is it possible for a user to add a new (user-defined) document type to the "New" dialog box list that pops up when selecting File>New... ?
For example, I want an RDF document type. It would use a template rdf document. Of course, I can create the document template as a code template and store it with my templates. But I can't figure out how to get it to appear as a standard option in the "New" dialog box list of document types.
