XML Editor 16.0, build 2014052022 Does Not Start On Workstat

I am having an issue with my office workstation machine. I ran previous versions of editor with no problem at all. I just installed this latest update, and it fails to show anything when I launch it. I see oxygen16.0.exe in the Windows Task Manager showing zero CPU. Nothing ever appears on the screen though. I have to kill the process.

I will try rebooting my computer to see if this gets resolved in some way.

I have the same issue as above after rebooting.

Hi,

Does it start if you navigate to the Oxygen installation folder and start there the oxygen.bat startup/fallback script?

Adrian

Hi Adrian.

No. Same issue when I attempt to launch via oxygen.bat file. Now a java.exe process shows in Task Manager using zero CPU.

I usually launch the editor after an install, so I think this issue is new with this latest update. This is the only machine where I have encountered this. My office laptop does not have this issue. Oxygen does not get a chance to create a log4j file at all, so it is dying before full startup.

For the time being, I uninstalled 16.0 and reverted back to 15.2 build 2014040317. This version starts with no issue on the same machine. Also, this is the 64-bit versions of both editors.

Hi Jamil,

From what you're describing this looks like a Java runtime start issue. Oxygen v16.0 bundles Java SE 7u55, while v15.2 is using 7u40.
Could you please install v16 again side by side with v15.2 and try replacing the Java runtime from v16 with the one from v15.2?
In the v16 installation folder rename the 'jre' folder (e.g. 'jre.old') and copy there the 'jre' folder from the v15.2 installation folder. Make sure both Oxygen installations are of the same architecture (32/64 bit).

Regards,
Adrian

I have the same problem with 16.0 2014052022 x64 on Windows 7.
Replaced the jre folder with 15.2 2014040317's one. No luck.

Hi,

Have you tried running oxygen.bat after replacing the JRE?
Try starting the simplest Java app included with Oxygen, the user manual in Java help format, userManual.bat. Does that start?
If that works, try some of the .bat and .exe launchers of simpler tools, treeEditor, diffFiles, largeFileViewer. Do any of them work?

Regards,
Adrian

Command prompt opens and then gets stuck.

This one runs fine.

None of them works. (neither .exe nor .bat)

Hi,

Run from the command line one of the .exe launchers with the argument '/create-i4j-log'.
e.g.

Code: Select all

diffFiles.exe /create-i4j-log
It should prompt you to open Windows Explorer at the location of the generated log file.
Please send us the log file to support@oxygenxml.com.

Adrian

Sorry I could not respond earlier due to issues in the office.

I believe the issue I am experiencing now is related to this new build. The initial version 16.0 build worked on this computer. Unfortunately, I do not see a way to download the previous build to confirm.

As I wrote to support@, it's not that oxygen does not start... It starts. But it takes 30 minutes for the window to show up. :(
Once the window shows up, seems to work fine.

Hi,

Can you both please check if you have an anti-virus or security software that scans compressed archives?
After starting Oxygen, check if you have another process (probably a SYSTEM process) that uses CPU, that should be the security software scanning the Oxygen libraries.

Oxygen loads a lot of jar libraries (a form of ZIP archives specific to Java) at startup and security software can delay it until it finishes scanning every loaded library.

If you have administrative access over the security software, try to temporarily disable the scanning of compressed archives (or real time file scanning).
If that's indeed the issue, a permanent solution would be to add the Oxygen\lib folder to the list of files/folders excepted from scans in the the security software.

Adrian

There is no significant difference between the initial build (2014051618) and new build (2014052022) of v16.0. Most patches from the new build are for WebHelp.

Did you maybe install it in a different folder the first time around?
Was it the same architecture (32/64 bit)?
When you updated to the new build, did you install it in the same folder as before?

If you want to try again with the initial build of v16.0, please write an email to our support email address, support@oxygenxml.com and mention the product (Editor, Author, Developer), platform (Windows, Linux, Mac) and architecture (32/64) you need the kit for.

Adrian

I have confirmed that the software does eventually start after a very long wait. I am not sure how long it took for it to eventually start, but the next morning when I woke up, the software was finally open.

I install to default folders each time and do not change folders. I also allow the installer to uninstall the previous version. Everything worked fine up until this latest build. Since it is only one machine that I am having this issue with, I will use 15.2 for it.

To answer questions regarding virus scanners, the machine having issues runs Trend Micro. I cannot turn it off or remove it.

Tested on x86. Same as x64.
Attached a debugger and found that the main thread was stuck on Winsock recv() waiting for 2 bytes.
Killed and restarted the process. Set a breakpoint, skipped recv() and fooled the process into thinking recv() just failed. And Large File Viewer started immediately.
So apparently, it's related to an initial raw network transaction. What is the latest oXygen doing there?

Adrian,
I think you can reproduce the problem on your site:
Open [Control Panel] - [Internet Options]. On [Connections] tab - [LAN settings], set proxy server to a valid proxy server, or even a non-proxy server with an opened port such as localhost:135 or http://www.google.com:80.

The forum automatically added "http://", but I actually meant Address:"www.google.com", Port:"80".

Hi,

I'm already behind a private HTTP proxy and it doesn't cause any trouble.
I've also tested with localhost:135, but there was no difference.

Could you please generate an Oxygen log (different from the install4j launcher log)?
I have provided instructions to enable Oxygen logging in the reply to the email you sent to our support email address (with the install4j launcher log).

Adrian

Hi,

We have identified and fixed the issue in the current development stream. The issue was in the proxy automatic configuration script handling. It affects the first two builds of Oxygen v16.0 (2014051618 and 2014052022).
The problem is triggered when both 'Automatic configuration script' and the 'Proxy server' settings are configured in the Windows proxy settings. There may also be other proxy configurations (e.g. WPAD) that trigger this problem.

The bugfix will be available in the next maintenance build of Oxygen v16.0 (later this week or next week). We will notify this thread when the bugfix becomes available.
You can also follow this RSS feed for maintenance builds of Oxygen:
http://www.oxygenxml.com/rssBuildID.xml

Until the bugfix becomes available, a quick workaround for this problem is to navigate to the 'Oxygen/jre/lib' folder and change the extension of the file 'deploy.jar' (e.g. 'deploy.old'), or simply delete the 'deploy.jar' file. Without this file Oxygen will no longer be aware of the proxy automatic configuration script and it won't get stuck at startup. You will probably also have to manually configure the proxy settings in Oxygen in Options > Preferences, Network Connection Settings > Proxy.

Regards,
Adrian

Thank you for the investigation. The workaround worked for me. Now I can start working with 16.0 new features. :)
I'm not sure but I hope Jamil's case is solved too.

I renamed the file specified above to deploy.jar.old. This does nothing to resolve this does nothing to resolve the issue. Additionally, I always start oxygen editor after a new install to fix my toolbars. I did this with the initial build of 16.0. Per my email, if you makr the build available for doenload, I will confirm for you.

I am not confident that the correct fix will be happening, but I will help you trouble shoot, since I can reproduce the issue with ease.

Hi,

This problem has been resolved in the latest maintenance build of Oxygen 16.0, 2014060420 (released on June 11th):
Startup/Windows/Proxy: If both 'Use automatic configuration script' and 'Proxy server' settings were configured in the Windows 'Internet Options', the application hanged at startup for more than 10 minutes.
You can download it from our web site:
http://www.oxygenxml.com/download.html

The list of bug-fixes can be found here:
http://www.oxygenxml.com/build_history.html#2014060420

You can follow the release/build RSS feed here:

Let us know if you encounter further problems with this new build.
