Oxygen MCP Server Preferences
The AI Positron add-on installed in Oxygen XML can function as a local MCP (Model Context Protocol) HTTP server. This allows third-party AI assistants installed on your own computer such as Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Open Code, or Cursor to connect and use all tools defined and contributed by AI Positron. These include tools for validating XML, refactoring, running XPath, finding in files, reading and editing content, and accessing the current editor context (the opened project, files, currently edited files, and the current selection).
Configure and start the server in the Oxygen XML page.
- Port
-
The port number on which the local MCP HTTP server listens for incoming connections. Change this value if the default port is already in use by another application.
- Start / Stop
-
A button that starts or stops the local MCP HTTP server. The first time you click Start, you must accept an End User License Agreement (EULA) before the server can run. After the initial acceptance, the EULA is not displayed again for subsequent starts and stops.
When the server is running, third-party AI assistants can discover and call the tools provided by AI Positron.Important:The server must be started manually each time you restart the Oxygen XML application.Note:The MCP HTTP server can be started only if you are using Oxygen XML Enterprise version or the AI Positron Enterprise license.Important:This feature gives the ability to an LLM used by a third party AI Assistant to read, modify, and delete your local files using AI Positron provided tools.
By enabling the MCP Feature, you agree to the following:
-
You are solely responsible for the configuration, security, and all consequences of any automated use of the editorOxygen XML application via the MCP Feature.
-
You knowingly and expressly assume all risks associated with this automated use. These risks include, but are not limited to modification, corruption, or deletion of your local files and data or disclosure or exfiltration of your data to third-party services.
-
- Copy MCP Configuration
-
Copies the MCP configuration JSON to the clipboard. Paste this configuration into your AI assistant's MCP settings to establish the connection. The copied configuration includes the port and a unique authentication token. Once added, the AI assistant will be able to discover and call the XML tools available in the Oxygen XML AI Positron add-on.
Tools
All AI tools that are part of the
AI Positron add-on are available through the use of the HTTP MCP server to the
third-party AI Assistant, with the exception of the Run command line
tool.
AI Tools contributed by the main Oxygen XML application and other installed plugins which are loaded by the AI Positron add-on also become available through the started HTTP MCP server.
get_oxygen_xml_application_context- Retrieves context information obtained from the open Oxygen XML application, including the project context prompt configured by the user, information about the documents open in the editor and DITA Maps Manager, information about the currently selected document (including the content selected inside it), and the list of skills available to be loaded.
open_document_in_oxygen_xml_application- Instructs Oxygen XML to open a document and make it the currently edited document. If the document is already open, it is selected as the currently edited document.
Preview File Changes
When the HTTP MCP server is started, a new MCP server status button appears on the AI Positron chat view. If changes are made to files using the edit tool provided by AI Positron via MCP, clicking the status button shows a dialog box that allows you to review all changes made by the external AI assistants and accept, modify, or reject them.
