This may give the processor a bit more help.



I think you'd need


<xsl:key name="element-by-name" match="*"
     use="concat(name(),' ',generate-id(..))"/>

row[key('element-by-name',concat($param,' ',generate-id(..)) = 5]

or, in xslt2:

<xsl:key name="element-by-name" match="*" use="name()"/>
row[key('element-by-name',$param,.) = 5]

otherwise you'd select every row if any row had a child of that name with value 5.
