Not really. It's not at all clear why you expect self::{$name} to mean
anything in xpath when {} is never used in any oethr xpath construct.

Do you find it surprising that you can't use a string valued variable in
C or java as a function name? If you have a function f in C then you
have to go
f(1,2,3)
you can't ho
x="f";
x(1,2,3)
It's not impossible to design a language with those semantics but it's
not at all usual, and there is nothing inconsistent in xpath here is
there?
