I think the original problem needs clarification too but if the full XPaths are stored in the config file then some extension is needed to evaluate these dynamically.

I don't think you need an extension just use for-each-group rather than
for-each and group=starting-with="something" then the number required is
just position() but I didn't understand teh problem description well
enough to say exactly what the group (ie file chunk) start condition
was.
